Amsterdam

By Rahul viz

In Amsterdam there are 1000s of coffee shops where one can go freely. It not only serves coffee, but also hashish and marijuana are available. People of Amsterdam have achieved a higher state of civilization than the rest of the world, as they have a more rational attitude to facts-of-life like drugs and prostitution.

The word coffeeshop, conveniently created by the Dutch habit of running words together, has become synonymous with a special kind of coffee shop. These places do sell coffee and have one or more tables to sit and drink it but, their primary commodity is cannabis. These days they are licensed by the local council and subject to regulation. A strict minimum age of 18 is enforced.

Coffee shops are not allowed to advertise, so you won’t see a big sign saying “Marijuana for Sale”. If there is no dealer’s booth, just go up to the bar and ask to see the 'menu'. There will a list of the various different grasses and hashes available at a range of prices.

Cannabis prices vary according to shop location and type. In the centre of Amsterdam prices tend to be a little higher especially in places that cater for tourists - that includes both rip-off joints and connoisseur’s shops. Coffee shops are not allowed to advertise their wares.

Head shops have been around since the 1960s which sell all kinds of smoking paraphernalia (pipes, bongs, papers, rolling machines), books, comics, posters, T-shirts, etc. Grow shops have evolved alongside the rise of Nederwiet, the weed grown in the Netherlands that is supplanting imported grass and hash. They sell cannabis seeds and all of the equipment to grow them. Some of the shops are related to the major seed banks that breed the improved varieties of marijuana. All will give advice on cultivation. Smart shops are also found outside of the Netherlands, selling “herbal”or smart drugs. Dutch smart shops are different because they also sell magic mushrooms.
